An Old, Metal-rich Accreted Stellar Component in the Milky Way Stellar Disk

چکیده

Abstract We study the possibility that Milky Ways’ cool stellar disk includes mergers with ancient stars. Galaxies are understood to form in a hierarchical manner, where smaller (proto-)galaxies merge into larger ones. Stars galaxies, like Way, contain their motions and elemental abundance tracers of past events can be used disentangle merger remnants from stars formed main galaxy. The history Way is generally particularly easy halo. advent ESA astrometric satellite Gaia has enabled detection completely new structures halo such as Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage. However, simulations also show may important for build-up disks. Combining abundances ?100 giant branch APOGEE DR17 data we use ratios find hitherto unknown, old component Way. further identify small sample RR Lyrae variables kinematics same chemical signature accreted red disk. These allow us date component. they exclusively old.

Phase Models of the Milky Way Stellar Disk

A new iterative method for constructing the self-consistent phase equilibrium models of stellar systems with a fixed mass density distribution is used for constructing the Milky Way Galaxy disk model. In this method, we use the density distribution in the Galaxy as input data. Here we used two Galactic density models (suggested by Flynn, Sommer-Larsen & Christensen 1996; Dehnen & Binney 1998a)....

The Milky Way ’ s stellar disk Mapping and modeling the Galactic disk

A suite of vast stellar surveys mapping the Milky Way, culminating in the Gaia mission, is revolutionizing the empirical information about the distribution and properties of stars in the Galactic stellar disk. We review and lay out what analysis and modeling machinery needs to be in place to test mechanism of disk galaxy evolution and to stringently constrain the Galactic gravitational potentia...

MaGICC Thick Disk I: Comparing a Simulated Disk Formed with Stellar Feedback to the Milky Way

We analyse the structure and chemical enrichment of a Milky Way-like galaxy with a stellar mass of 2 × 1010 M, formed in a cosmological hydrodynamical simulation. It is disc dominated with a flat rotation curve, and has a disc scalelength similar to the Milky Way’s, but a velocity dispersion that is ̃50 per cent higher. Examining stars in narrow [Fe/H] and [/Fe] abundance ranges, we find rema...

Chemical Inhomogeneities in the Milky Way Stellar Halo

We have compiled a sample of 699 stars from the recent literature with detailed chemical abundance information (spanning −4.2 . [Fe/H] . +0.3), and we compute their space velocities and Galactic orbital parameters. We identify members of the inner and outer stellar halo populations in our sample based only on their kinematic properties and then compare the abundance ratios of these populations ...

The Edge of the Milky Way Stellar Disk Revealed Using Clump Giant Stars as Distance Indicators

We use the clump giants of the disk as standard candles calibrated from Hipparcos parallaxes in order to map their distribution with two new near-IR surveys of the Galactic plane: UKIDSS-GPS and VVV. We explore different selection cuts of clump giants. We conclude that there is an edge of the stellar disk of the Milky Way at R = 13.9±0.5 kpc along various lines of sight across the galaxy. The e...
